AI Matchmaking Apps Compared: Amata, Sitch, Known, Volar (and a Free Option)

Fox Chen, founder of OtherDay

TL;DR

Amata, Sitch and Known all use an AI matchmaker to interview you and set up real dates, and they charge per date or per intro in a handful of US cities. Volar, an early AI avatar dating app, appears to have closed. Which one fits depends mostly on where you live and what you want to pay.

Disclosure first: we make OtherDay, a free game where your AI twin meets other people's twins. It's listed last below, and it's a different kind of product from the matchmakers. We've tried to describe each app the way its own listing and the press describe it, with sources and dates, so you can decide for yourself.

AI matchmaking apps all start from the same complaint: swiping takes forever and leads to very few actual dates. Their answer is to let an AI interview you, pick a few people, and in most cases set up the date too. They differ a lot in how you talk to the AI, what you pay, and which cities they work in.

All facts below were checked on October 19, 2026. Prices and cities in this category change often.

Amata

How it works. Amata's site describes four steps: you talk to an AI matchmaker about your interests and personality, it searches for a strong match, it "sets the time and the venue," and you get a debrief afterward. According to Global Dating Insights, there's "no swiping, no inbox full of messages," and a direct message channel "opens only two hours before the scheduled meeting." Dazed's reviewer described joining a waitlist, getting in within a day, and moving forward only after both people said yes.

Price. Reports differ. Global Dating Insights said a date token was "currently priced at $16" in October 2025. Dazed, later that month, reported $20 per token. Amata's App Store listing also shows several "Amata Plus" in-app purchases from $34.99 to $119.99, without saying what each covers. Check the app for current pricing.

Where. According to Global Dating Insights, Amata's US launch began in New York after "a preliminary testing phase in Australia." Neither the website nor the App Store listing names cities.

Backing. Global Dating Insights reported $6 million in pre-seed funding. Its CEO is Ludovic Huraux.

Strong fit if you live in New York, want someone else to handle the logistics, and like the idea of skipping the pre-date texting entirely.

Know before you start: you meet a stranger after barely any back-and-forth, by design. If you like to chat for a while first, that's a real tradeoff.

Sitch

How it works. According to TechCrunch, Sitch asks "almost 50 questions," which you can answer by text or voice. M13, which led its seed round, says you can also call in and talk to a voice modeled on co-founder Nandini Mullaji. When both people agree to meet, "Sitch will set up a group chat like a friend would," per M13. Its App Store listing says "Every profile is reviewed by real people on our team."

Price. Sitch charges per setup. TechCrunch listed packs of three ($89.99), five ($124.99) and eight ($159.99), and the App Store shows the same packs, plus single setups at $24.99 or $34.99 and a "Sitch Monthly" plan at $29.99.

Where. TechCrunch reported New York only in June 2025. The current App Store listing names New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Chicago and Austin.

Backing. According to TechCrunch, Sitch raised a $5 million seed from M13 and a16z speedrun, about $7 million in total.

Strong fit if you're in one of those five cities, you want a real date rather than more chatting, and you'd rather pay for a few well-chosen setups than spend hours swiping.

Know before you start: the up-front cost is real, and the quality of your setups depends on how many people in your city and age range are on it.

Known

How it works. You start with a voice call instead of a form. Known's App Store listing says most members spend about 26 minutes on it. You get one introduction at a time, both people have 24 hours to accept, and once interest is mutual, the app checks calendars, picks a restaurant and makes the reservation. According to Global Dating Insights, photos stay hidden until two people have built some rapport. You can also ask Known questions about your match based on their onboarding call, per the listing.

Price. It's free to join. The App Store lists "1 Date Credit" at $15, and Global Dating Insights reported a "$15 fee for each confirmed date" in May 2026. During its beta, TechCrunch reported Known "charged $30 per successful date."

Where. According to Global Dating Insights, Known launched in San Francisco in mid-February 2026, with plans to expand to Southern California later in 2026. The App Store listing refers to "launch cities" without naming them.

Backing. Funding figures differ. TechCrunch reported $9.7 million from Forerunner, NFX, Pear VC and Coelius Capital in December 2025. Global Dating Insights reported "more than $10 million" in May 2026. The founders are Celeste Amadon and Asher Allen.

Strong fit if you're in the Bay Area, you'd rather talk than type, and you like the idea of one considered intro at a time.

Know before you start: one match at a time is slower by design. If you want options, that can feel limiting.

Volar

How it worked. Volar was the closest to the "AI version of you dates first" idea. According to Global Dating Insights in January 2024, users were "assigned an AI avatar that reflects their interests and personality." The avatars chatted with other users' avatars, and people could read those conversations and step in if they were interested. It launched in Austin, Texas. The founder was Ben Chiang.

Status. As of October 19, 2026, volar.app redirects to a GoDaddy domain-for-sale page. An August 5, 2026 item on Online Personals Watch, summarizing a Wall Street Journal story, called Volar "a now-closed AI dating app." We couldn't find a shutdown announcement or date, so we'd describe it as appearing to be closed. We found no pricing information.

A free option: OtherDay

Again, this is ours. OtherDay isn't a matchmaker, and it won't book you a dinner reservation. It's a life-sim game. You make an AI twin and teach it how you talk by text or voice. It lives in a small California harbor town, meets local characters and, depending on your settings, other players' twins. Then it tells you what happened. Your twin can't message a real person. Players can message each other only after their twins have met and both say yes.

Price. Free to play. OtherDay Plus is an optional subscription in the iPhone and Android apps. Paying never makes another player say yes.

Where. In your browser at otherday.ai, and on Android. The iPhone app is coming soon. It's for adults 18 and older.

Strong fit if you're curious, not in a hurry, and want to try the "AI version of you goes first" idea without paying per date or living in a specific city.

Know before you start: it's a game first. It's new, so in the beginning your twin may meet more in-game characters than other players. A real match is never guaranteed, and the matchmakers above are more direct if your goal is a date this month.

How to choose

A few questions decide most of it:

  1. Do you live in a covered city? This rules out more options than anything else. Sitch lists five cities. Known and Amata launched in one each.
  2. What will you pay for a date? Per date or per intro, the apps above have been reported at roughly $15 to $35 for a single date or setup, with Sitch's packs bringing the per-setup cost down. Check current prices in the app.
  3. Text or voice? Known starts with a voice call. Sitch takes either.
  4. How much do you want to talk before meeting? Amata opens chat two hours before. Known books the date once you both accept. If you want more context before meeting a stranger, look for apps that let you see more first.
  5. Do you want a date, or to try something new? The matchmakers are built to get you to a table. OtherDay is built to be played.

Questions

What is an AI matchmaking app?

An AI matchmaking app replaces swiping with an AI that interviews you by text or voice, then suggests a small number of people it thinks suit you. Most of them also help set up the date.

How much do AI matchmaking apps cost?

Most charge per date or per introduction. As of October 2026, Known's App Store listing shows $15 per date credit, Sitch lists packs from $89.99 for three setups, and Amata has been reported at $16 to $20 per date token. Prices change, so check the app before you sign up.

Which AI matchmaking apps work outside New York and San Francisco?

Few. Sitch's App Store listing names New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Chicago and Austin. Known launched in the San Francisco Bay Area, and Amata launched in New York. Availability changes, so check each app's listing.

Is Volar still available?

It doesn't appear to be. Volar's website now redirects to a domain-for-sale page, and an August 2026 news summary called it a now-closed AI dating app. We couldn't find a shutdown announcement.

Is there a free AI dating app?

OtherDay is free to play. It isn't a matchmaker. It's a game where your AI twin meets other players' twins first, and two real people only talk when both say yes. OtherDay Plus is an optional subscription.

Do I talk to a human matchmaker on these apps?

Mostly no. Amata, Sitch and Known all use an AI matchmaker for the conversation. Sitch says real people on its team review every profile.
