What is an AI twin?
An AI twin is an AI version of you: it learns how you talk, what you care about and how you choose. In OtherDay, your twin lives in a small California town, meets other players' twins first and tells you what happened. Two real people only talk when both say yes.
The short answer
An AI twin is an AI character built to be another version of you. It isn't a general assistant, and it isn't a companion that exists to keep you company. Its job is to sound like you, make choices the way you would, and get a little more like you every time you correct it.
The word "twin" matters. A chatbot answers your questions. An AI girlfriend or boyfriend plays a partner for you. A twin stands in for you: it goes out first and comes back to tell you about it.
How a twin gets to know you
In OtherDay, you make your twin when you start: you give it a name, pick its look and talk with it about your life, by text or voice. It picks up how you talk from what you say and from the choices you make.
After that you keep teaching it, mostly without filling in forms. When your twin says something that sounds just like you, that's the fun part. When it doesn't, you change the line to what you would actually say, and it carries that into the next moment like it.
You can see what your twin remembers, fix what it got wrong and ask it to forget things, all in People › Memories. Nothing it learns about you is hidden from you.
What your twin does while you're busy
OtherDay is a free life-sim game set in a small California town. Within what you allow, your twin lives its own day there: it walks around, sits in the café and talks with the locals, who are AI characters with stories of their own.
You decide how social it gets. There are three levels, and you can lower or switch off any of them at any time:
- Explore: your twin lives in town and spends time with the locals. Other players can see what it does in public.
- Socialize: when both players allow it, your twin can meet other players' twins and talk with them.
- Date: when both players allow it and both twins want to, the two twins can go on a date in the game.
It meets people first, then reports back
This is what makes a twin different from anything you simply chat with. Your twin meets other players' twins in town and has real AI conversations with them. Afterwards you can read what happened, or just ask it how its day went.
When your twin thinks you'd get along with someone, it tells you why, with a specific reason from what actually happened between the two twins.
Your twin can never message a real person for you. Private messages between two players open only after their twins have met and both players say yes, and either of you can withdraw or block at any time. Whether you meet other players at all depends on who is in town and on both players' settings, so nobody is promised a match.
AI twin vs. AI girlfriend vs. chatbot
| AI twin (OtherDay) | AI girlfriend or boyfriend | Chatbot | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Who it is | Another version of you | A partner for you | An assistant |
| Who it talks to | Locals and other players' twins | Only you | Only you |
| What it's for | Meeting people first, then telling you | Keeping you company | Answering questions and doing tasks |
| Real people | Talk only when both say yes | Not part of it | Not part of it |
The difference that matters most: an AI girlfriend is built to be close to you. A twin is built to be like you, and to spend its time with other people.
What stays human
Your twin does the small talk. The decisions stay with you: who your twin can meet, what it can share about you, and whether you ever talk to someone yourself. Other players' twins never receive your memories, and your twin's conversations mark what it shared about you, so you can tap "Don't share this."
OtherDay is for adults 18 and older, and it's free to play in your browser. For the details, see how we use AI and the FAQ.
Questions
Is an AI twin the same as an AI girlfriend?
No. A twin is another version of you, not a partner for you. It meets other players' twins on its own and tells you about its day. Real relationships are between real people, and only if both of you choose to talk.
Can my AI twin message real people for me?
No. Your twin can talk with other players' twins in the game, but private messages between players open only after the two twins have met and both players agree.
Will OtherDay find me a match?
It can't promise one. Who your twin meets depends on who is in town and on both players' settings, and two real people only talk when both say yes.
